SAFETY BRIEFING
This briefing is for ride leaders on all trail rides, to be read before each ride start. It is based off Forest Service risk assessment. It is not meant to be 'everything and the kitchen-sink' but is a guide. This is informational for trail ride leaders - but available for everyone. (please also check out the general ride rules which people agree to in the ride waiver)
Remember AFTER the ride: IF there were any incidents during the ride you MUJST email details of the incident to the RMBCH Board / Please enter volunteer hours for you and your riders / Followup with your riders with pictures etc
BEFORE the ride: You must have waivers signed & conduct safety briefing.
Introduce RMBCH
Introduce yourself as ride leader
Give short intro on what Rocky Mountain BCH is about (trail work / education and access to the back country / advocating for equine use in back country.
Ride Plan for they day / Introductions
How long will the day be, what will they see, what are you excited about as a ride leader that day.
What is unique about this ride? Why did you choose it as a ride leader.
Will you be stopping for lunch or other viewpoints
Walk trot canter?
Do they have any questions
Tell them how you ride - can people with fast horses go ahead of you? are you always at the front?
Riders introduce themselves. What would they like from the ride that day. Does their horse need to be in a certain spot.
Hazards
Dogs / Children / Wildlife / Terrain / Strollers / Joggers / Backpacks / ATV's / Other horses / Water crossings
Does anyone have a kicking horse etc
Health & Safety
Ride at your own risk
Ride to your own ability / your own horses ability /
know your limits with health & heat
RMBCH Rules Overview
EVERYONE including the ride leader must have their ride waiver signed for each ride. If they signed online that is ok. If not, they need to sign the paper copy or they cannot ride. If they get cell service they can also use the online form
We are trail ambassadors! Be ultra kind to other trail users and not overly preachy :) let the trail boss handle any conflicts
Leave parking lots and trailheads clean (leave no trace with hay) Pack out manure from dirt and paved parking lots
Dont park trailer in car spaces if possible / use trailer type of area
No foul language towards other riders
Trail boss decisions are final
Additional Work Safety Rules
Know your health and skill limits. You are responsible for yourself and your equine.
Do not use someone's personal tools without asking
Take care of tools. BE SAFE! Tools are SHARP! Don't leave blades in the dirt. Don't leave tools behind.
